Abstract
This study examines variables related to child care and psychosocial characteristics of children who experienced child care in child care centers at different times: early child care (before 18 months) and late child care (after 36 months). The subjects are 23 children who had early child care and other 23 children who had late child care. The age of the children ranges from four to six. The early child care began at 13 months and lasted for 41 months, and the late child care began at 38 months and continued for 20 months. It was found that the early child care was mostly caused by lack of time of working mothers. The late child care was motivated by mothers¡¯ concerns on the influence of child care experiences in child care centers on children. Mothers of both groups were concerned about social and emotional influences of child care centers on their children. In terms of parent-child interactions, most mothers of the children in the early child care group said that they rarely played with their children at home in the evening. Mothers of both groups responded that they were mostly satisfied with child care centers. It was also found that the major care-giver of the children at home was their mothers. In terms of psychosocial development, the children who experienced early child care produced high scores in block design, showing higher cognitive developmental characteristics than the children who had late child care. In terms of sensory integration, the children who had early child care showed higher visual/auditory sensitivity than their counterparts. In terms of emotional and social behaviors, no significant difference was found between the two groups.
